Africa has two types of rhinoceros, the white ones which are actually grey and the black ones. These ungulates which mean that they are related in a very close way to the equines, or horses and zebras, and the tapir have a thick, very thick skin with layers of collagen. They possess small brains for the size of their bodies and they eat leafy material without the two front teeth. I saw them running, walking and eating while we were in a jeep at close range. They move their bodies in an amazing way.

Rhinoceros are killed by humans for their horns, which are bought and sold on the black market, and which are used by some cultures for ornamental or traditional medicinal purposes. The horns are made of keratin, the same type of protein that makes up hair and fingernails. There had been several actions taken to discourage the idea that the horns can save lives as a medicine, still they are poached and in some areas they are already extinct.

In the wild, adult rhinoceros have no real natural predators other than humans. Young rhinos can fall prey to predators such as big cats, crocodiles, wild dogs, and hyenas. Although rhinos are large and have a reputation for being tough, they are very easily poached; they visit water holes daily and can be easily killed while they drink. With the rhinos I saw many other animals as I have been telling you, but I saw the wild dogs only in the first page of a newspaper and they looked absolutely beautiful, there was a whole explanation of their behavior and actually that change my opinion about them.

There are legends about rhinoceros stamping out. The mythical rhinoceros would come when a fire is lit in the forest and stamp it out… There are no recent confirmations of this phenomenon. However, this legend has been reinforced by the film The Gods must be Crazy, where an African rhinocero is shown to be putting out two campfires. I love the movie, it is genial.
