There had been several questions nowadays about intuition, so, I went to Wikipedia and I found interesting ideas. Lets start with the original definition:
Intuition, the modern usage of which has been formally derived from the work and writings of Immanuel Kant, is the ability to acquire knowledge without inference or the use of reason. The word intuition comes from Latin verb intueri which is usually translated as to look inside or to contemplate. Intuition is thus often conceived as a kind of inner perception, sometimes regarded as real lucidity or understanding. Cases of intuition are of a great diversity, however processes by which they happen typically remain mostly unknown to the thinker, as opposed to our view of rational thinking.
Now let’s go to the recent definition:
In more-recent psychology, intuition can encompass the ability to know valid solutions to problems and decision making. For example, the recognition primed decision (RPD) model explains how people can make relatively fast decisions without having to compare options. Gary Klein found that under time pressure, high stakes, and changing parameters, experts used their base of experience to identify similar situations and intuitively choose feasible solutions. Thus, the RPD model is a blend of intuition and analysis. The intuition is the pattern-matching process that quickly suggests feasible courses of action. The analysis is the mental simulation, a conscious and deliberate review of the courses of action.
Let’s go with an spiritual definition:
Intuition is commonly discussed in writings of spiritual thought. Contextually, there is often an idea of a transcendent and more qualitative mind of one’s spirit towards which a person strives, or towards which consciousness evolves. Typically, intuition is regarded as a conscious commonality between earthly knowledge and the higher spiritual knowledge and appears as flashes of illumination. It is asserted that by definition intuition cannot be judged by logical reasoning
If we look how the brain works according to How to Create a Mind by Ray Kurzweil :
…”By concidering the likelihood of different interpretations of a phrase…”
….”Neuro anatomist have not found a hopelessly tangled arbitrarily connected network, completely idiosyncratic to the brain of each individual, but instead agreat deal of repeating structure within an individual brain and a great deal of homology across species…” Dharmendra Modha
…”Each neuron and each neuronal component is following an algorithm ( after all, these are molecular mechanisms that follow natural law)…” The refinement of a canonical circuit = The Brain Reverse Engineering Project have clearly identified hierarchies of units of functionality in natural systems…. especially the brain, and AI systems are using comparable methods… We are creating these tools to make ourselves smarter…. I believe that most observers will agree with me that this is what is unique about the human species. We build these tools to extend our own reach…”
Where do you think intuition is?
Since we are born we started collecting data, we experiment as babies even how come that a spoon cannot be sustained in a bowl if the bowl is inverted and not in any surface? I have seen does experiments in babies… This only means that gravity law is acquired by experimentation. The first noises to call for attention from Mommy are learned too… we can keep going and thinking that intuition is just the Data accumulated over time to try to forecast a situation… How about if we have not only what is in our brain but also in a software that helps us for example to check if we are certain our team is going to perform well in a given Season… There are movies, books, news dedicated to understand, bet, forecast everything about nothing else than sports. If we have the tools to applied a formula to understand not only the likelihood of an event but all events, any event and be so precise that we can be accurate and precise… I think that is more than the formula for the eternal youth or the formula for things transformed into gold, which by the way they are known now, but not ready to be practically usable. Then, do you think that we have the crystal bowl to see the future? Insurance companies, casinos, stock market, guarantees for any article, elections and many other institutions and activities are already under the umbrella of an educated intuition or you can call it Statistics, Simulations, Mathematical Technics etc. People more than ever are exploring data, analyzing data to make decisions. Imagine that every single person can make a question in their mobiles about a forecast for the simplest events of a daily life and be ready to act accordingly to the best outcome. For the goodness of Mankind… Why are you studying Statistics? Well that is a reason. That is why I am studying Exploratory Data Analysis. One day not to far from now, everybody will be able to have this magic crystal bowl. Here is the link for the course https://www.udacity.com/course/ud651
